squiresandbrown won the architectural competition to design the new Pre-Prep in 2009. Securing planning approval for this fascinating project proved to be a challenge. Not only is it a Green Field site, but it also lies adjacent to a 14th Century Grade II* Listed manor house. The former kitchen garden became a magical setting for the building, creating a protected play space enclosed by high brick walls and a folly that were also Listed. A contemporary, playful style was welcomed by English Heritage with the final Egg and a Box design receiving praise from all quarters. The scheme includes air source heat pumps, natural stack ventilation chimneys, an ecological roof garden and sunpipes.
