squiresandbrown are an architectural practice with extensive experience of designing all facilities found within independent schools including boarding houses, swimming pools, sports halls, specialist teaching facilities, libraries, dining halls for both Prep Schools and Senior Schools. We provide all traditional services including Contract Administration, feasibility studies and computer animations.
As part of their strategic planning, schools often appoint us to help them design a Campus Development Plan. This process reviews the existing estate, identifies spare capacity, highlights weaknesses in facilities relative to the sector and explores options for how best to re-shape facilities in order to deliver the school’s goals for the future. We help guide the school through the process offering expert advice and creative ideas to maximise the impact of any capital spend. We typically complete a wide-ranging consultation with the whole school community to understand the issues and ethos of the school. We often include a Space Audit which produces analytical data such as room utilisation within the timetable to highlight inefficiencies and limit the need for expensive new build projects. By helping the school to critical review its existing condition, goals and ambitions for the future, a Campus Masterplan can ensure a sensible phased strategic framework for development.
In recent years we have been invited to apply our knowledge of the sector to international school projects, in particular in China and the Middle East. We have worked for clients including Brighton College and Malvern College, completing strategic appraisals to address questions of capacity and the potential for expansion. We have designed several Campus Masterplans which have led to building projects, including a prep school at Brighton College Al-Ain in the UAE. We have also been invited to review and comment upon designs by non-specialist local architects to ensure they meet the standards expected by the affiliated UK school.
Over the past twenty-two years we have gained invaluable experience of managing building projects on live school sites. Our understanding of both construction logistics and school operations allows us to monitor, manage and administer complex projects and we are skilled at working with the multiple stakeholders found within independent schools. As Project Managers our involvement focuses on controlling cost, time and quality offering a dedicated direct advisor sitting outside of the traditional Design Team.
